CBD, the trendy cosmetic for pets

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis sativa plant that provides multiple benefits to the skin thanks to its moisturizing, regenerating and revitalizing effects. CBD has an enormous moisturizing power, as it contains up to 14 times more fatty acids than olive oil. CBD contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, trace elements (iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus) and vitamins A, B, C and E.

Cannabidiol contains only 0.2% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the substance that produces a psychotropic or psychoactive effect. The marketing of cosmetic products containing cannabidiol has been authorized in Europe since November 2020.

Hemp oil, obtained from the seed of the hemp bush, is green in color and is used in dermo-cosmetic formulations to give elasticity and revitalize hair. In addition, hemp oil is a natural sebum regulator that helps eliminate itching and combat dryness.

Why is it fashionable?

Since its authorization in cosmetics, CBD is experiencing a boom. Countless laboratories have included in their portfolio shampoos, conditioners, creams, eye contours, serums, etc. with this active ingredient that provides multiple benefits thanks to its moisturizing, antioxidant, regenerating and soothing properties. It is also indicated for different topical conditions such as atopic dermatitis, pruritus or psoriasis. Its application also reduces redness and provides a natural shine to the coat thanks to its great moisturizing capacity.

Dog cosmetic brands have included cannabidiol oil in their shampoo and conditioner formulations because it provides intense shine and enhances coat color. CBD is often presented in joint formulations with other active ingredients to enhance its nourishing and moisturizing properties.

CBD Benefits

Hemp seeds are rich in two essential fatty acids: omega-3 and omega-6, which contribute to soothe and soften the skin. It is especially indicated in cases of coats in need of a lot of hydration and softness. These effects can be enhanced thanks to the combination of cannabidiol with other active ingredients.

This is the case of PSH Pet Skin Healthcare, which has launched Premium Herbal Fusion, a range that treats the dog's coat by deeply nourishing and providing vitality and shine thanks to cannabidiol oil combined with biotin and yeast protein hydrolysate.

Premium Herbal Fusion contains amino acids, trace elements and antioxidants that regulate oily seborrhea and have a moisturizing effect to help keep hair healthy and strong, prevent hair loss and scalp irritation. In addition, the formula is reinforced with highly conditioning active ingredients such as hydrolyzed yeast and a vitamin B complex to ensure moisturizing and skin care.

Use as a prohibited drug

The Federation of European Veterinarians (FEV) issued a statement a few months ago on the use of cannabis in veterinary medicine, recalling that "until now, no cannabis-derived product has been authorized as a veterinary medicinal product in Europe. Some are, however, registered as homeopathic in the legislation on veterinary medicinal products".

The European Veterinary Federation warned of an increase in cases of clinical toxicity in animals, but also an increased interest among clients in the therapeutic use of these products for their pets as a result of the international increase in the use of cannabis and derived products in North American and European countries.

The FEV recognized that cannabinoids such as CBD are promising therapeutic products for, for example, treating osteoarthritis pain, inflammatory problems, immune-mediated disorders, epilepsy and other pain treatments. However, the scientific evidence available for use in animals is currently limited. In this regard, most of the few clinical studies that do exist are anecdotal or based on case reports, FEV points out.

Among the association's main recommendations is to promote studies to investigate the potential therapeutic value and safety of cannabis-derived products for companion animals (including horses). In addition, they include among the proposals the conduct of well-controlled clinical trials and seeking national or European Union authorization. "Manufacturers of cannabis-derived products should be promoted so that high quality products of known safety and efficacy can be made available to veterinarians and their patients".
