Prevention of external parasites in spring

Our furry friends are very sensitive to seasonal changes and with the arrival of spring, their body sensations and behaviors can be altered.

Along with the good weather comes the rise in temperatures and changes in nature that encourage the presence of insects of many types. Therefore, our best friends can be affected by frequent allergies at this time of the year, reddening of the skin, itching, irritation of the eyes and ears or lesions on the paws and pads.

What are the most frequent external parasites?

Fleas: This is a very common type of blood-sucking insect. The bites of this type of insect cause mainly itching. In more extreme cases, when our pet does not stop scratching, we may be facing a flea infestation. They can be detected through skin reactions such as red spots, pustules or scabs in areas such as ears, back, base of the tail or inner areas of their paws.

Ticks: They are a much more dangerous type of parasite. With the change of season, their presence is very frequent and increases the risk that some of them get attached to our pets, especially when they walk in parks, fields or forests. The most frequent symptoms are inflammatory reactions, even once they have been removed from the skin. In more serious cases, they can transmit diseases such as ehrlichiosis, babesiosis or anaplasmosis.

Mosquitoes: There are many types of mosquitoes, some more dangerous than others. In Spain there are two of the most frequent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes that can negatively affect our pets: Heartworm disease, which affects the respiratory system and has symptoms such as difficulty breathing or coughing, among others; and leishmaniasis, which causes skin lesions, weight loss, diarrhea, kidney and liver failure, among other symptoms.

Why is parasite prevention crucial?

Our pets can transmit up to 40 types of zoonoses, including parasitic diseases. Therefore, it is essential to perform recurrent deworming.

In addition to external parasites, which we have discussed above, there are other types of internal parasites that also cause serious diseases. Some of the most prominent are eye and lung worms and whipworms. The change of season with its consequent increase in temperatures increases the presence of all of them, both external and internal.

How to protect our dog or cat from parasites?

From PSH we recommend you some tips to keep your pet as far away as possible from uncomfortable parasites:

  • Internal prevention: It is essential to visit the veterinarian you trust to keep their vaccinations up to date and to have their antiparasitic tablet, collar or pipette that guarantee the protection of our dogs and cats. A regular check-up is the first step for the prevention and safety of our pets.
  • Maintain proper hygiene: Bathing our pets frequently is one of the best defenses against pests. From PSH we have developed the specific Stop Bites routine that has a shampoo and lotion for daily use to keep uncomfortable parasites at bay. It is formulated with Andiroba oil which is an excellent natural repellent that also has emollient and soothing properties. It also has lemon peel which enhances the antiparasitic properties.
