Spring changes critters!
Prevention of external parasites in springOur furry friends are very sensitive to seasonal changes, and with the arrival of spring, their bodily sensations and behaviors can be altered. Along with good weather comes rising temperatures and changes in nature that encourage the presence of many types of insects. For this reason, our best friends can be affected by frequent allergies at this time of year, skin redness, itching, irritation in eyes and ears, or lesions on their paws and paw pads. |
What are the most common external parasites?Fleas: This is a very common type of blood-sucking insect. Bites from this type of insect mainly cause itching. In more extreme cases, when our pet can't stop scratching, we may be facing a flea infestation. They can be detected through skin reactions such as red spots, pustules, or scabs in areas such as the ears, back, base of the tail, or inner areas of their legs. Ticks: These are a much more dangerous type of parasite. With the change of season, their presence is very frequent, and the risk of one attaching to our pet increases, especially when they walk through parks, fields, or forests. The most common symptoms are inflammatory reactions, even after they have been removed from the skin. In more severe cases, they can transmit diseases such as ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, or anaplasmosis. Mosquitoes: There are many types of mosquitoes, some more dangerous than others. In Spain, there are two common mosquito-borne diseases that can severely affect our pets: Heartworm disease, which affects the respiratory system and has symptoms such as difficulty breathing or coughing, among others; and leishmaniasis, which causes skin lesions, weight loss, diarrhea, kidney and liver failure, among other symptoms. |
Why is parasite prevention crucial? Our pets can transmit up to 40 types of zoonoses, including parasitic ones. For this reason, regular deworming is essential. In addition to the external parasites we have mentioned previously, there are other types of internal parasites that also cause serious diseases. Some of the most notable are ocular and pulmonary worms and whipworms. The change of season, with its consequent increase in temperatures, increases the presence of all of them, both external and internal. |
