Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis sativa plant that offers multiple benefits for the skin due to its moisturizing, regenerating, and revitalizing effects. CBD has enormous moisturizing power, containing up to 14 times more fatty acids than olive oil. CBD contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, trace elements (iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus), and vitamins A, B, C, and E.
Cannabidiol has barely 0.2% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the substance that produces a psychotropic or psychoactive effect. Since November 2020, the commercialization of cosmetic products with cannabidiol has been authorized in Europe.
Hemp oil, which is obtained from the seeds of the hemp bush, is green and is used in dermocosmetic formulations to provide elasticity and revitalize hair. In addition, hemp oil is a natural sebum regulator that helps eliminate itching and combat dryness.
Why is it trending?
Since its authorization in cosmetics, CBD has been experiencing a great boom. Countless laboratories have included shampoos, conditioners, creams, eye contours, serums, etc., with this active ingredient in their portfolios, which offers multiple benefits thanks to its moisturizing, antioxidant, regenerating, and soothing properties. In addition, it is indicated for different topical conditions such as atopic dermatitis, pruritus, or psoriasis. Its application also reduces redness and provides a natural shine to the coat thanks to its great moisturizing capacity.
Cosmetic brands for dogs have included cannabidiol oil in their shampoo and conditioner formulations because it provides intense shine and enhances coat color. CBD is often presented in joint formulations with other active ingredients to double its nutritional and moisturizing capacity.

Benefits CBD
Hemp seeds are rich in two essential fatty acids: omega-3 and omega-6, which help calm and soften the skin. It is especially indicated for coats that need a lot of hydration and softness. These effects can be enhanced by combining cannabidiol with other active ingredients.
This is the case of PSH Pet Skin Healthcare, which has launched Premium Herbal Fusion, a range that allows treating the dog's coat by deeply nourishing and providing vitality and shine thanks to cannabidiol oil combined with biotin and hydrolyzed yeast protein.
Premium Herbal Fusion contains amino acids, trace elements, and antioxidants that regulate oily seborrhea and have a moisturizing effect that helps keep hair healthy and strong, preventing hair loss and scalp irritation. In addition, the formula is reinforced with highly conditioning active ingredients such as hydrolyzed yeast and a vitamin B complex to ensure skin hydration and care.
Prohibited use as a medicine
The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FEV) issued a statement a few months ago regarding the use of cannabis in veterinary medicine, reminding that "to date, no cannabis-derived product has been authorized as a veterinary medicine in Europe. Some are, however, registered as homeopathic under veterinary medicine legislation."
The European Federation of Veterinarians warned of an increase in cases of clinical toxicity in animals, but also greater interest among clients in the therapeutic use of these products for their pets as a result of the international increase in the use of cannabis and derivative products in North American and European countries.
The FEV recognized that cannabinoids such as CBD are promising therapeutic products for, for example, treating osteoarthritis pain, inflammatory problems, immune-mediated disorders, epilepsy, and other pain treatments. However, the scientific evidence available regarding its use in animals is currently limited. In this regard, most of the few existing clinical studies are anecdotal or based on case reports, states the FEV.
Among the association's main recommendations is to promote studies to investigate the potential therapeutic value and safety of cannabis-derived products for companion animals (including horses). In addition, they include among the proposals the conduct of well-controlled clinical trials and the search for national or European Union authorization. "Manufacturers of cannabis-derived products should be promoted so that high-quality products of known safety and efficacy can be made available to veterinarians and their patients."
